Ukraine-Brunei Relations

Brunei recognized independence of Ukraine on October 3, 1997. Diplomatic relations between our two countries were established on the same day. Bilateral relations acquired content following strengthening Ukraine's diplomatic presence in the South-East Asia. During several years Embassy of Ukraine in Singapore has been representing Ukraine in Brunei (concurrently); Brunei in Ukraine – Permanent Mission of Brunei to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva (concurrently).

Political dialogue was launched by the official visit of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to Brunei in 2003, when arrangement was reached on the visit of President of Ukraine to Brunei. The first high-level visit (L.Kuchma, March 2004) outlined the intentions of interaction between the Sides. The reciprocal visit of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to Ukraine took place in June 2004.

First Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Ukraine visited Brunei in January 2007; Ukraine-Brunei consultations at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers was held in Brunei in June 2009.

State visit of the President of Ukraine (V.Yanukovych) at the invitation of Sultan of Brunei was held in March 2011. Friendly character of Ukraine-Brunei relations and interest to develop cooperation were confirmed. The conclusive Joint Statement testified to coincidence of positions on a number of important regional and international issues, as well as agreements on areas of cooperation.

Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Brunei met on the sidelines of the Presidential visit. The Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Defense Sphere and Agreement (by the exchange of notes) on Visa-free Regime were signed.

The Sultan of Brunei was invited to visit Ukraine with the State visit.

Brunei delegation abstained during the voting on the Resolution during the ballot of Resolution № A/68/L.39 «Territorial Integrity of Ukraine» during the 68th session of the UN General Assembly on 27 March 2014.

On January 13-14, 2017 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin paid an official visit to Brunei Darussalam. Minister Klimkin  had audience with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, as well as with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. There were also separate meetings with Honorable Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, as well as Honorable Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali Bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism of Brunei Darussalam.
