Public Diplomacy

Over the years since the establishment of diplomatic relations cultural cooperation and humanitarian exchanges have contributed to the deepening of mutual awareness between Ukrainians and Singaporeans. Ukraine becomes much more knowable in Singapore not only due to the Russian invasion that has been lasting since early 2014 but also because of the wide range of cultural and humanitarian events:

  • Ukrainian Culture Days in Singapore (24 April – 14 May 2008). The exhibitions of contemporary Ukrainian art (painters the Gapchinskis), historical and ethnographic dolls (master T.Fedorova) and illustrated books of publishing house "Ababahalamaha" were held during the Days.
  • Participation of Ukraine in the Youth Olympic Games in August 2010 (Ukrainian team won 35 medals).
  • Exhibition of Miniatures by M.Syadrystyi and Scythian Gold holography (March 2011).
  • Reception on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Independence of Ukraine (September 2011). The event was accompanied by concert of Ukrainian artists. The Ukrainian and Tatar cuisine was catered by the cooks from Sevastopol.
  • Concerts by Polish-Ukrainian jazz trio "Dagadana" which toured the region as part of the "European Season in Singapore" (December 2011).
  • Publication of "Gateway Ukraine" dedicated to the 20th anniversary of establishment of Ukraine-Singapore diplomatic relations (March 2012).
  • Exhibition "Gold Rush: Treasures of Ukraine" at the National Museum of Singapore (May – August 2012).
  • Days of Oleksandr Dovzhenko in Singapore (24-28.08.2012). S.Trymbach, Head of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine, gave the series of lectures on O.Dovzhenko's cinematographic at the School of Art, Design and Media of Nanyang Technological University. The exhibition of O.Dovzhenko’s movies posters and other famous Ukrainian film makers was open during the Days.
  • Publication of "Forever in our hearts" photo album initiated by L.Fedotova, spouse of Ambassador of Ukraine (December 2012). The publication was supported by former President of Singapore R.Nathan. This project helped to raise donations to Children’s Cancer Foundation of Singapore.
  • Visit to Singapore by motorcyclist girl from Ukraine Ganna Grechyshkina on her World Trip under the motto "I have a dream" (December 2013).
  • Charity auction of paintings by Ukrainian artist Oleg Lazarenko (March 2014).
  • Participation of Ukrainian films at the European Union Film Festivals in Singapore: "FireCrosser" by director M.Illienko (2013), "Ivan the Powerful" by director V.Andrienko (2014), "Brothers. The Final Confession" by director V.Trofimenko (2015) and "The Tribe" directed by Myroslav Slaboshpitsky (2016).
  • Since 2014 the Ukrainian Club in Singapore (UCS) started its social, educational and charitable activity.
  • Participation in cooperation with the Ukrainian Club in Singapore at the Diplomatic Charity Bazaar (October 2015); Collected amount was handed over to local charitable children's funds.
  • Participation in cooperation with the Ukrainian Club in Singapore in activities of the Willing Hearts charity organization (February 2016).

  • National Museum of Singapore held the World Press Photo exhibition where a separate booth was dedicated to the events of the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine (January-February 2016).


  • Prayer service was organised at Church of the Sacred Heart in Singapore to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant catastrophe and victims of the disaster (April 2016).


  • Photo exhibition by Singapore-based French photographer Christophe Malcot “Chornobyl Today” took place at The Private Museum in Singapore to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant catastrophe (May 2016).


  • Ukrainian community in Singapore marked the 20th Anniversary of coming into force of the Ukrainian Constitution (June 2016).


  • Ukrainian community in Singapore marked the 25th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine and the 1st Anniversary of the Ukrainian Club in Singapore. The event was organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukrainian Club (September 2016).



  • Piano Solo Recital Concert of the famous Ukrainian piannist Kseniia Vokhmianina, as a part of the Singapore International Festival of Music (October 2016).


  • In framework of the Ukrainian Week in Singapore dedicated to the celebration of 25th anniversary of Independence of Ukraine (October 2016) the prominent Ukrainian chef Iurii Kovryzhenko offered well-known Ukrainian dishes for the visitors and residents of Singapore.


  • In framework of the Ukrainian Week in Singapore at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay one of the most promising young Ukrainian violinists Alexander Korniev presented his debut recital concert (November 2016).


  • The prayer service was organised at the Orthodox Church in Singapore to commemorate victims of the Holodomor manmade famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine and to honor the memory of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred (November 2016).


  • Ukrainian Tropical Christmas tree at the Singapore Botanic Gardens decorated in Ukrainian national embroidery style participated in the annual "Trees of the World" event (December 2016).


  • Ukrainian kids in Singapore celebrate St. Nicholas Day – traditional Ukrainian holiday orginised by the Ukrainian Club in Singapore and supported by the Embassy of Ukraine (December 2016).



In its turn, the Singapore side accounts several events in Ukraine:

  • Participation of the Chinese Opera Theater of Singapore in the 3rd International Theatre Festival (September 2010, Yalta).
  • Presentation of Ukrainian language version of Lee Kuan Yew’s Memoirs during his visit to Ukraine (September 2010).
  • Participation of Singapore tourism companies in the International tourism fair in Kyiv (April 2012).
  • Film “Ilo Ilo” by Singaporean director Anthony Chen won Best First Feature and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 43rd Molodist International Film Festival in Kyiv, Ukraine.
