The EU Center organized a public talk by British Professor Anatol Lieven entitled "The Only Future for Ukraine Lies in Compromise: the Role of the European Union and Russia" on June 4, 2015.
Professor presented a detailed picture of prerequisites that led to the Revolution of Dignity on Maidan, and how Ukraine’s neighbors the EU and Russia tried to influence the Ukrainian internal processes. Also explained were many shortcomings in the position of Brussels regarding European aspirations of Ukraine, and on the other hand - attempts of Russia as the descendant of the declining empire to "absorb Ukraine in its geopolitical projects," including by annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and seizure of territories in eastern and southern Ukraine.
In the debates which followed the lecture, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Singapore Pavlo Sultansky thanked the scientist for his objective analysis of events in and around Ukraine. It was pointed at the fundamental falsity of allegations of the so-called "transfer of Crimea to Ukraine by Khrushchev" because all the relevant procedures were then implemented under the current law of the USSR. Ambassador also emphasized that allegations of division of Ukrainian society for nearly half of pro-Russian or pro-Western supporters are, at least, frivolous, and would be worth to recognize that prevailing majority of Ukrainian citizens is pro-Ukrainian.
